An Evening of Wine and Music

The Associazione Piemontesi nel Mondo of Northern California and the Museo’s Evviva young professional’s group joined forces to produce an evening of wine and music. This highly successful event took place at the Museo ItaloAmericano in San Francisco on March 24.

The evening began with a beautiful chamber music concert featuring the Barbaresco Players, who performed at the Zephyr International Chamber Music Festival in Valle d’Aosta (www.zephyrmusicfest.org). Among the pieces presented were Il Tramonto, a lyrical poem for mezzo-soprano and string quartet, and the Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet in A Major, K. 581, by Mozart.

The evening’s highlight included a wine tasting of the famous Barbaresco wine of Piemonte’s Langhe region (near Alba). Originating from vines planted by the ancient Romans who conquered the local Ligurian-Celtic tribes of the region, this prized wine from the Nebbiolo grape has deep historical roots. Barbaresco is a dry, elegant, complex, full-bodied, garnet-red wine rich in tannin. Other wines produced in the Langhe include Barolo, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera.

The Enoteca Regionale del Barbaresco supplied the quality wine and led the wine tasting. The Enoteca is located in the village of Barbaresco and assists in the promotion of its local wine production. For information on the characteristics, production, economics, and history of the local wines, visit their website at www.enotecadelbarbaresco.it.

Guests enjoyed some traditional Piemontese specialties along with the wine. Some of the goodies included grissini torinesi, crostini con funghi e olio d’tartufo, and the delicious Toma d’Alba cheese.

The Associazione Piemontesi nel Mondo of Northern California was founded to promote the study, awareness, and appreciation of the Piemontese heritage. For more information about this association, please visit their website at www.piemontesinoca.com.

Evviva is a group of young professionals from the Museo ItaloAmericano who are interested in promoting contemporary Italian art and culture. For more information about Evviva, please visit www.museoitaloamericano.org.
